Yanbaru is one of the most ecologically significant forests in Japan. Old trees, hidden streams, waterfalls you have to walk to. The roads up here narrow until they're tunnels of green, and the only signage is the kind locals don't bother explaining.

Our northern itineraries lean into the geography. Day-hikes to waterfalls. Sea kayaking the coast. Lodge dinners cooked from whatever the owner found at the market that morning. It's not the side of Okinawa most travellers see — and that's the point.

Pace is unhurried. The forest doesn't care if you're in a hurry, and the people up here don't either.
