The longer story

The morning is built around one waterfall. Thirty to forty minutes of easy wading up a river under thick subtropical canopy gets you there — most groups spend an hour at the pool before they realise. Lunch is laid out on the rocks. The water is cold. You'll want to swim twice. During the colder months, lunch is a hot bowl of Okinawa soba to warm you up, served at a charming little place deep in Motobu.

What happens after lunch depends on the day. In the afternoon, we cycle a stretch of the old Ryukyu coast through villages most travellers drive past, and stop at a local power spot with incredicle views. If the wind is right and you've asked in advance, we swap to a private boat for Minna Island and an afternoon snorkel. Your guide reads the weather and the group.

There's a fourth option some travellers end up loving most: a yachimun pottery studio. Two hours, hands in clay, you make a plate or a cup. They fire it after you leave and ship it home. Six weeks later something arrives in the mail that smells faintly of Okinawa.
